Kyusendo-cave

This cave is the biggest in Kyushu and the second longest in Japan. It has been a mysterious place for 300 million years! You can also enjoy the exciting adventure course, which is called "exploration course".

Forest House and Edison Museum

There are seven unique shaped domes, called Forest House and you can see them all from the river. You can learn about the system of the surrounding forests. In the Edison Museum there are over 2,000 inventions which the master Thomas Edison devised himself.

Kumagawa-Kudari

A boat ride down the waterway called Kumagawa-Kudari is very popular since Kumagawa is one of the three fastest rivers in Japan. Enjoy the seasonal landscape from the waterway and feel the wind on the river through the rapids.

Rafting

Rafting is a rubber boat ride down the Kumagawa. It is so exciting! Kumagawa is the only river which you can try rafting in Kyushu. Go through the rapids with an expert guide.

Rice field in Matsutani Selected as one of the 100 best rice terraces in Japan

TANADA is the symbol of rural cultures and Kuma-mura has two rice fields selected as the 100 best rice terraces in Japan. Matsutani is one of them. They cover about 10 hectares and 150 fields in Matsutani.

Rice field in Oninokuchi Selected as one of 100 best rice terraces in Japan

Oninokuchi is one of over 100 rice terraces in Japan as well as Matsutani. There hace been majestic rocks since the ancestors cultivated the land.

Shibatatehime Shrine

This shrine pays tribute to the god of blessing those with children, female disorders, hip disorders and prays for easy birth. The worshippers come from not only Kumamoto Prefecture but also all over Japan. It takes about 10 minutes from Isshouchi station by car.

Kounose Lime Cave, Kumanoza Shrine and Choumei-sui

Through Iwado Park there is the Kumanoza Shrine which is famous for the god of marriage in Kounose Lime Cave. In Edo era, "TAKAYAMA Hikokuro" visited here. There is "Choumei-sui" which is called the water of god. It was as one of the 100 best bodies of water in Kumamoto Prefecture.
It takes about 10 minutes from Shiroishi station on foot.

Isshouchi Station

Isshouchi Station on the Hisatsu-Line is considered. In the school entrance examinations season, many examinees who hope to pass the test by buying tickets and take the train in hopes of the lucky charm.
This station made of wood was built in 1908.

Unokuchi Kannondo Temple

This is the western most place of the 33 Kannon in Sagara and is famous for the perfect state of health. During the spring and autumn equinoctial week, many people come to visit and pray. It takes about 15 minutes from Watari station on foot.

Monument in memory of YOSANO Akiko at Shibatatehime Shrine

This thirty one syllabled verse was written by YOSANO Akiko when she visited Hitoyoshi and took a boat ride down the Kumagawa waterway.

Kumagawa Second Bridge

This bridge from Naraguchi station to Watari station is a precious structure made by the American Bridge Co. in 1906.

Isshouchi hot springs facility "KAWASEMI"

It is a big common tub! It includes a sauna made of cypress and an open-air spa. Come if you feel basking in the wood.
There is a restaurant with delicious Japanese food.

Stone community House "YAMANAMI"

The purpose of this house is to develop a sense of community and bond with activity. People enjoy the Yamanami for various types of parties including a year-end party, a New Year's Party, wedding parties, various workshops and any other special events.

Commercial museum "KAWASEMI"

There is a commercial museum named Kawasemi on the opposite side of the hot springs facility. You can view and buy fresh vegetables, wild plants and rice from the famous rice terrace. There are also many other items such as steamed buns, miso, special sauces, pear jam and local goods.
